Cloth-eez Prefolds in "Unbleached Indian"

unbleached prefold diapers

cloth eez prefold diapersUnbleached and white prefolds are about the same size except brown edge in unbleached is wider than brown edge in white. Other color edges are comparable.

shrinkage of prefold diapersPrefolds shrink and get soft and quilty after a few washings. They are supposed to do that.

Orange edge in white or unbleached are the same size as each other.

premature baby diaper Preemie size available in white. Preemie size makes a nice doubler.

Green edge prefolds are too long to fit in most newborn size covers. Most newborn babies really do need newborn diapers! Later on, after baby outgrows this size, these are still great for everything such as spit up rags, and very absorbent nighttime doublers. Babies are wet people. Cloths such as these are just plain handy to have around long after baby outgrows the newborn size.

Cloth-eez sizing is designed for size-skipping. Most people skip sizes. Orange for newborn, then yellow then brown, skipping over green edge and red edge entirely.

But green and red edge can be just right sometimes. 9 - 10 pound newborns should skip orange edge and start in green edge, then progress to red edge skipping yellow edge. Every baby is unique.

A word about layering Comparing layers (4-8-4, 2-5-2, etc.) is not apples to apples because brands vary. I've seen some 4-6-4 layered diapers that are thicker than some brands of 4-8-4 diapers, so we don't focus on the layering but on size and weight of the diaper. How much a diaper weighs tells you how absorbent it is. The more cotton, the more it weighs, the more absorbent. That said, all of our prefold diapers are 4-8-4 ply except preemie.

Measurements and weights of the prefolds are here and also below. Scroll down.

The new Cloth-eez® Prefolds are not the same sizes are the former green and blue edge diapers pictured on the babies here. We still have the green edge and blue edge diapers, though. The wider, shorter Cloth-eez prefolds fit really well. Cloth-eez®.

How to put an Infant size prefold diaper into a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap size Newborn:

diaper diapers

Fold down the front (or back) to get desired length, then fold in thirds

Place folded diaper in wrap, put it on baby. Optional: diaper is shown here tucked under front flap of cover. You aren't really "supposed" to put the diaper under the flap, but lots of moms do, so we show it the way many people really do it. The folded down diaper is more bulky than the orange edge newborn which fits into this newborn cover without folding down.

cloth eez prefold snappi prefold
2 months old, 12 pounds in a pinned Infant prefold with front folded down. The same baby the same day in the same infant prefold, Snappi Fastened, but the front is not folded down. This 2 month old fits the green edge prefold ok, but really the additional width of the yellow edge would be a better fit.

Above showed size Infant. Next we'll show size Orange Edge Newborn.

newborn diaper newborn prefold

Newborn Orange Edge on left, Infant on right.

A full thickness 4-8-4 prefold that is short enough to fit in Bummis Super Snap size newborn without folding down.

We made the Newborn Orange edge size to be the perfect newborn prefold. It is the full width and thickness of the Infant size, but is shorter in length so it actually fits in newborn covers without the awkward folding down. You can pin or snappi this on a newborn. You can't do that with preemie size because they are too narrow, and preemie size is not nearly as thick and absorbent as the Newborn Orange Edge.
Can you skip Newborn Orange Edge and start with size Infant? Maybe. But the Newborn offers an economical alternative to newborn size fitted diapers and it's really nice to have diapers that fit in those early weeks. If you are on a tight budget, skip this and start with Infant size.

"Newborn prefold diapering perfection." - a customer talking about newborn orange edge diapers, June 2007.

Customers often ask if they can skip orange edge newborn and start with yellow edge. Here is orange edge in unbleached and yellow edge in white pinned the same way on the same 2 week old 7 pound 10 ounce baby. You could fold down the yellow to make it shorter, which has not been done for this picture in an effort to compare them directly. Unless your budget is very tight, get the newborn orange edge for your newborn because they actually fit newborn babies and fit in newborn covers.

Alternative Fold (sideways):

cotton prefold

Start horizontal and fold in fourths, green edge infant shown

Place diaper folded in fourths in a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap or other wrap style cover. Newborn Super Whisper Wrap shown. This gives a trim at the hips fit, but the disadvantage of the Alternative Fold is that you can't fan it out at the back and bring the wings to the front, so you are more likely to get poop on the cover than when you spread out the diaper in the back.

Regular Premium blue edge Prefold on a 5.5 months old, 18 pounds baby:

2 left pictures are regular No Pins Method (fold down front) in a Bummi Super Print medium. At right is Alternative Fold (sideways, note where blue trim is.)

Alternative method in a Bummi Original Medium.
Please note! In real life, you would bring the prefold and cover up between baby's legs all at once, then fasten velcro tabs. We show it like this, bringing prefold up first, only so that you can see where the diaper is, and of course, for modesty in the pictures.

Toddler size prefolds are available, but many babies will potty learn before they get to size Toddler prefolds. However, consider the Toddler size as your nighttime diaper for babies about age 9 months or over. A toddler size prefold is a wonderful, washable, inexpensive changing pad. Have a few on hand.

Thinner is less bulky but it is also less absorbent. Generally, that's the way it is with diapers. If someone tells you otherwise, question it.

More cotton = more absorbency = more bulk.

Less cotton = less absorbency = trimmer fit under clothes = more frequent changes. What's your style? What's your preference?

Start with prefold sideways this way. Fold it in thirds or fourths. Place it in cover.  Bummis Super Print size medium is shown with a Regular Premium prefold. The thick part is under baby's bottom and nothing is folded down on baby's tummy.  This prefold is tucked under the flap, which is optional.

Alternative fold again - can be in thirds or fourths: middle step is optional

Fact about prefold diapers: they are FLAT when they are brand new, but shrink and get soft and quilty after washing. We recommend washing all diapering items several times before first use to "prep" them, or break them in before using.

Sizes vary. Generally, the pictures and measurements are pretty good, but all prefold diaper brands including ours have variances in size and shrinkage rates. Sizes are approximate, not exact. Don't sweat picking out the right size too much. If you are unsure between 2 sizes, pick the larger one. Why? Bigger diapers are more absorbent and babies grow! Better a little big than a little small, and the differences in size are not really that much after all.

prefold diapers

Chlorine-free white from China or Unbleached "Indian" from Pakistan? White are a little bit trimmer, unbleached are a little bit softer. they are very similar to each other. Unbleached hide stains slightly better, but white has that pure, clean white diaper look. Which color do you like and which one is the best fit for your baby? Unbleached take a few extra hot washes to break in. All diapers need several wash cycles before first use to prep themk, so no worries about breaking them in.

White Prefolds Our white diapers are CHLORINE-FREE, hydrogen peroxide bathed, NOT chlorine bleached. Hydrogen Peroxide similar to the main ingredient in OxiClean. It's dioxin-free and acid-free, known as "natural bleaching process". We do recommend washing all diapers, no matter what kind, several times before use to prepare them for use. They will shrink to size and get soft and quilty after washing. Unbleached Indian prefold diapers have not been de-gummed and must be washed many times in hot water to remove the natural cotton oils from them before they become fully absorbent which could be 6 cycles or more.
